Silicosis and Engineered Stone: A Research Agenda for Safety Solutions
Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) from engineered stone has led to severe respiratory health outcomes, particularly among young workers. Used in countertops and other various surfaces, engineered stone can contain up to 95% silica and when cut or ground, can pose significant health risks. Australia has now banned engineered stone with over 1% silica due to rising silicosis cases in workers exposed to its dust.
Further bans and measures aimed at reducing exposure through safer materials and enhancing protective measures could prevent further silicosis cases and protect workers in high-risk occupations.
